Emergency Department Bio's

Nenad Grlic, D.O.
Dr. Grlic is the Director of Emergency Medicine. He completed his undergraduate Life Sciences degree and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in an exceled seven-year program from New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury in 1992. He completed a combined Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine Residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY. Before coming to Mercy, he was the Associate Director of Emergency Medicine at Bronx Lebanon in the Bronx, NY. He has been at Mercy since July of 2006. Along with his family, he resides in Nassau County. Dr. Grlic is also fluent in Croatian. During his downtime, he enjoys tending to his garden.

Kurt Dischner, M.D.


Dr. Dischner is the Assistant Director of Emergency Medicine at Mercy. He first gained an interest in Emergency Medicine while an Emergency Medical Technician for Amherst-Columbia Ambulance Service in his home town of Buffalo, NY. He is a graduate of SUNY at Geneseo where he received his undergraduate degree. He received his medical degree from SUNY Buffalo. He completed his Emergency Medicine Residency in June of 2005 at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He has been an ER physician at Mercy since July of 2005. Dr. Dischner along with his family reside in Suffolk County, NY.

Christina Zhang, D.O.


Dr. Christina Zhang did her undergraduate studies at SUNY- Stony Brook. (Go Sea Wolves!!!) Dr. Zhang went on to receive her Doctor of Osteopathy from the Des Moines University College of Osteopathy in Des Moines, Iowa. She did her Emergency Medicine residency at Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, NJ. She is board certified in Emergency Medicine from the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians. She has worked at Mercy Medical Center since January of 2013. Dr. Zhang along with her family reside in Queens, NY. Additional, Dr. Zhang is fluent in Mandarin.

Elizabeth Foxen, M.D.


Dr. Elizabeth Foxen hails from the great Midwest. Dr. Foxen did her undergraduate at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio.  Dr. Foxen went on to receive her Medical Degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in Rootstown, Ohio. She did her Emergency Medicine residency at University of Massachusetts in Worchester, MA. She practiced in Massachusetts for several years before relocating to Long Island.  She is board certified in Emergency Medicine from the American College of Emergency Physicians. She has worked at Mercy Medical Center since January of 2009. Currently, Dr. Foxen along with her family reside on Long Island.

Gaurav Verma, M.D.


Dr. Gaurav Verma grew up in Queens and did his undergraduate studies at SUNY- Stony Brook in Biochemistry. Dr. Verma then went on to receive his Medical Degree SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY. Followed by his Emergency Medicine residency at North Shore University Hospital – Hofstra School of Medicine in Manhasset, NY. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine from the American College of Emergency Physicians. He has worked at Mercy Medical Center since July of 2015. Dr. Verma along with his wife currently reside in Queens. Additionally, Dr. Verma is fluent in Hindi.

Bryan Tran, M.D.


Dr. Bryan Tran did his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Tran went on to receive his Medical Degree from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Mahwah, NJ. Dr. Tran did his Emergency Medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine from the American College of Emergency Physicians since 2011. He has worked at Mercy Medical Center since July of 2015. Dr. Tran, along with his dog reside, in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Tran is an artist of the traditional Vietnamese dance.

David Patrick Neubert, MD

Dr. Neubert completed his undergraduate studies at Williams College in Williamstown, MA. He received his medical degree from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. He completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Albany Medical Center Hospital in Albany, NY. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine from the American College of Emergency Physicians since 2007. He has worked a various emergency departments in the state of Pennsylvania. He returned to his home town of Long Island in June of 2016 to start working at Mercy. He is also the Medical Director for the Town of Hempstead Ocean Life Guards in Point Look Out. He also has numerous EMS tactical experience. He is also the Medical Director for the Point Look-Out Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Currently he resides in Nassau County.

Joseph Sachter, MD
Dr. Sachter completed his undergraduate studies Columbia University in New York. He received his Medical Degree from SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY. He completed his Emergency Medicine residency at Metropolitan Hospital in New York City. He is board Certified in Emergency Medicine from the American College of Emergency Medicine since 1991. He has worked at Mercy since April of 2011. Along with his family, he resides in the Bronx.

Lukas Shutler, M.D.


Dr. Lukas Shutler did his undergraduate studies at West Virginia University College of Engineering. (Go Mountaineers!!!) Dr. Shutler went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine Degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, WV. Dr. Shutler did his Emergency Medicine residency at New York Hospital of Queens Flushing, NY. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine from the American College of Emergency Physicians. He has worked at Mercy Medical Center since May of 2016. Dr. Shutler along with his wife reside on Long Island. Additionally, Dr. Shutler is an avid juggler.

Jonathan Sandner, MD
Dr. Jonathan Sandner completed his undergraduate degree in biology at Boston University where he also gained an interest in emergency medicine working as an EMT in the greater Boston area.  He later moved back to his home state of New York and worked as a clinical research assistant at Columbia University in the field of motor neuron disease.  He attended medical school at SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine and graduated with his M.D. in 2012.  Dr. Sandner completed the emergency medicine residency program at North Shore University Hospital and is board certified in emergency medicine.  He joined the emergency department team at Mercy Medical Center in the summer of 2015 as a full time attending physician. 

Maria Rosero, D.O.


Dr. Rosero completed her undergraduate studies at New York University in Manhattan. She received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, NY. She completed her Emergency Medicine Residency at Saint Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx. Along with her family she resides in Nassau County. She is also fluent in Spanish.

Palwasha Mahir, PA-C


Ms. Palwasha Mahir did her undergraduate studies at Pace University in New York, NY. She went on to receive her Physician Assistant and Master’s Degrees from Pace University in August of 2011. She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She is certified in Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. She has worked at Mercy since August of 2015.

Christine Busching, PA-C


Christine Busching graduated from SUNY Stony Brook with a Bachelor of Science Degree and as a Certified Physician Assistant. She completed her Masters in Physician Assistant Studies in 2004 and she is currently certified in BLS, ACLS and PALS. Christine has worked in Emergency Medicine over 22 years and Internal Medicine for 8 years where she held the position of Senior Physician Assistant in charge of the telemetry floors and PA Students at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Christine has worked at Mercy Medical Center for over 14 years, she has maintained her membership in NYSSPA and AAPA and she is an active member of the Admissions Committee for incoming PA's at SUNY Stony Brook.

Ryan Murphy, PA-C


Ryan Murphy did his undergraduate studies at SUNY Buffalo with a Bachelor’s in biomedical studies.  He went on to receive his Physician Assistant and Master’s Degrees from New York Institute of Technology in May of 2016. He is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. 

Tami Kavanaght, PA-C
Tami Kavanaght did her undergraduate work at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. While at The University of Rochester, Tami was part on Medical Emergency Response Team. She developed her love for Emergency Medicine while working as an EMT-D. She went on to receive her degree in Physician Assistant studies from Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. She has been certified by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants since 2005.

Jessica Ambrose, PA-C
Jessica Ambrose did her undergraduate studies at Farmingdale State College in Farmingdale, NY. She went on to receive her Masters of Physician Assistant Studies from New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, NY. Prior to joining Mercy, she worked at Nassau University Medical Center as part of the Neurosurgery and Trauma team. Jessica joined Mercy in May of 2016. Jessica and her family currently reside in Nassau County.

Susan Krauthamer, NP, PA-C
Susan Krauthamer is a registered Nurse, an Adult Nurse Practitioner, a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Physician Assistant. She completed her nursing degree at Queensborough Community College in Bayside, NY. She completed her Nurse Practitioner studies at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She was the first Nurse Practitioner to work in the Emergency Department and Primary Care Clinic at Kings County Hospital. She completed her Bachelor of Art degree at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY. She also received her Masters from Adelphi. Sue has been a part of the Emergency Medicine team since 1993. She resides in Nassau County with her husband. When she is not working the overnight shift, she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren.

Terri Maiorino, PA-C
Terri Maiorino received her Bachelors of Art degree in Psychology from the State University of NY in Buffalo. She went on to get her Physician Assistant degree from SUNY – Brooklyn. She has been certified by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants since 1997. She has been employed at Mercy since 1997. Along with her family, she resides in Nassau County.

Jackie McDevitt, PA-C


Jackie (Price) McDevitt did her undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland at College Park. This is where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She went on to get her Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies from Hofstra University. She is certified from National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants since 2015. She has several years of academic Spanish Language and studied in Barcelona. Along with her husband she resides in Queens.

Jessica Estanislau, RPA-C
Jessica Estanislau completed her undergraduate studies at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island in May 2012. She received her Masters of Science Degree from the New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury. She is certified from National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants since 2016. Prior to joining Mercy, Jessica was a Research Assistant at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. She currently resides on Long Island. She is fluent in Spanish.

Amanda Caputo, PA-C
Amanda Caputo completed her undergraduate studies at Molloy College. She went on to receive her Master’s in Physician Assistant studies from New York Institute of Technology in old Westbury in 2016. She is certified from National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants since 2017. She resides in Nassau County. Before receiving her degrees, she was an EMT for the Town of Hempstead and the North Bellmore Volunteer Fire Department. In her spare time, Amanda loves to play the harp.

Leeva Mathew, DO
Leeva Mathew completed under graduate studies at the New York Institute of Technology. She went on to get her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree also at the New York Institute of Technology. She completed her Emergency Medicine Residency in June of 2016 at Saint Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, NY. While at St. Barnabas, she received the Compassion Award from the Hospital Administration and her peers. She is board certified in Emergency Medicine from the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians. She started working at Mercy in March of 2017. She currently resides in Nassau County. Dr. Mathew holds the world record for yodeling by an Emergency Medicine Resident.
