What is Bone Density Test (DEXA or BMD)?

BMD

Bone Density Test use small amounts of radiation to determine the Bone Density of the spine, hip or wrist.

Your results are compared with those of healthy young adults of your sex at their peak bone mass.

This information can help you MD diagnose osteoporosis or determine whether you need to take certain steps to protect your bone health.


Who performs my BDM?

Your examination will be performed by a qualified Radiologic Technologist (RT) licensed by the state.

How is a BDM performed?

A BDM test is simple, safe and painless. In most cases you don’t even need to undress.

How long does the BDM take?

Test of the spine, hip or wrist can take two to five minutes each.

Why do you need a BMD test?

Your doctor recommended a BMD test to help:

  • Confirm a diagnosis of osteoporosis
  • Detect low bone density before a fracture occurs
  • Determine your rate of bone loss, if the test is repeated over time.
  • Monitor the effects of treatments over time.

What happens with the results?

A qualified Physician will generate a written report, which will be sent to the physician who referred you for the exam.
