CANCER CARE UNIT
The Cancer Care Unit at Mercy Medical Center is an 18-bed acute care unit, and part of the general hospital setting which utilizes all of the medical center’s ancillary services, providing care to the oncology patient in all phases of the disease process. Oncology nursing at Mercy is based on a multidisciplinary approach to care in which patients and their families are the focus of care, and all healthcare providers contribute to their care. The Unit is maintained by its own nursing staff. Surroundings are made as home-like as possible to produce a therapeutic environment. The care offered to patients and families is carried out through a team approach that addresses physical, spiritual, emotional and social needs. It consists of inpatient care, coordinated home care, education and support groups and bereavement care. The team consists of nurses, physicians, pastoral counselors, nutritionists, social workers and volunteers. The Cancer Care Unit is open 7 days a week, 24 hours per day. Patients and families have access to call the unit directly either during hospitalization or after discharge. For information, call (516) 705-1812.
