The Gamma Knife, the gold standard in radiosurgery, enables surgeons to treat lesions in the brain once considered inaccessible or inoperable.  Its highly focused beams of radiation offer the precision of surgery, without a scalpel and without the usual risks of surgery or an incision.  The Gamma Knife focuses the radioactive energy of 201 cobalt-60 sources on lesions and other targets in the brain.  Individually, these low-density beams are too weak to cause any damage.  However, when they converge on a target- like a brain tumor- they arrest the growth of the target and over time, cause the target cells to die.  Meanwhile, the health brain tissue remains safe and intact.
