Since their beginning in 1915 when ladies from Hempstead sold old linens on
the Mercy lawn to raise funds for the work of the Sisters, to the activities
today of twelve community-based organizations, the Leagues of Mercy have been
among the outstanding auxiliary organizations in New York State. Through the
fundraising events of the individual leagues, such as luncheons, fashion
shows, theatre parties, trips, acutions, raffles, etc., to the ambitious
projects of the Council of Leagues, significant funds are is raised each year
for capital improvement projects at Mercy.
Each year the Council sponsors a Spring Flower Sale, a Presidents’ Luncheon, a
Limited Raffle, the “Ladies Day of Sports” Golf and Tennis Tournament, a Fall
Crafts Fair, a Shopping Benefit, and the Tree of Lights holiday tree lighting.
In addition, the Thrift Shop, which the Council operates in Hempstead, as
well as the Gift Shop and Coffee shop, both located in the hospital, raise
more needed funds for Mercy while providing their individual services to the
community.
For a brochure on the “Garden of Caring” or for more information about the
Leagues in general, please contact the League Office at (516) 705-1833. The
Leagues are actively seeking new members, women who would be willing to donate
some of their time to raising funds for Mercy, while expanding their social
horizons as well.
