From Clinical to Colorful: Custom Mural Installed in Psychiatric Unit at Mercy
Mural to Help Stir Up Fond Memories for Patients Suffering from Mental Illness
Rockville Centre, NY— Mercy Medical Center, in partnership with Splashes of Hope, installed a new colorful mural in its psychiatric unit to help Mercy patients who are suffering from mental illness recollect fond memories. The four-by-eight-foot mural is a hand-painted custom design created by artist Sarah Baecher and Splashes of Hope volunteers. It features a gazebo park scene -- or Mercy Park, if you will --- and is designed to comfort patients during treatment, healing and recovery by providing a soothing and uplifting visual focus.
The project was funded by the Council of Leagues at Mercy Medical Center.
Fun fact: the dog featured in the mural is named Cody and he belongs to Pam Stengel, nurse manager of the psychiatric unit at Mercy.
Mercy staff featured in the photo include Ronald Brenner, chief of behavioral health services; Peggy Reddan, director of nursing; Pam Stengel, nurse manager; and Phil Polo, assistant director of engineering.
