The Friends of Mercy Medical Center Pledge $250,000 for New Hospice Unit at Mercy

26 December, 2017

Rockville Centre, NY – Mercy Medical Center and Good Shepherd Hospice both members of Catholic Health Services are working together to ensure Nassau residents have access to quality inpatient hospice services. The Certificate of Need application for a 12-bed hospice unit at Mercy was approved by the New York State Department of Health, and the unit will open in 2018.

The Friends of Mercy Medical Center kicked off the capital campaign for Good Shepherd Hospice at Mercy Medical Center with a pledge of $250,000. The Family Lounge on the unit will be named the Friends of Mercy Family Lounge.

Mercy operated a hospice unit until the late 1980s. Since its closure, Nassau residents have had to travel for these services. Like Good Shepherd’s inpatient hospice unit on the St. Charles campus in Port Jefferson, the new facility will accommodate terminally ill patients who require an acute level of care.

The unit will feature:

  • 24-hour/7-day access to acute symptom management in a homelike setting
  • Family-centered care
  • Physician services
  • Skilled nursing with expertise in hospice care
  • Medical social work
  • Home health aide assistance
  • Pastoral care
  • Bereavement services
