Weight-Loss/Bariatric Surgery

Weight-loss surgery, known medically as bariatric surgery, is performed on patients who are approximately 100 pounds or more overweight and have been unsuccessful with diet and exercise programs, and weight-loss medications.

Mercy Medical Center is a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence® designed by the American Society For Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

The Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation indicates that Mercy offers weight-loss surgery with efficacy, efficiency and safety matched by fewer than 30 percent of the hospitals that perform bariatric surgery across the country.

Mercy’s Bariatric Center offers both Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass (also referred to as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass), which is considered the “Gold Standard” of modern obesity surgery, and Laparoscopic Banding (Adjustable Gastric Band). Both procedures are performed using state-of-the-art, minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, with smaller incisions, less post-surgery pain, less time in the hospital, and a faster recovery.

Mercy Medical Center is the first hospital on Long Island to offer a new even less invasive gastric banding procedure known as Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) that uses just one small opening in the abdomen, through the navel, rather than the five incisions required in traditional techniques.

Mercy also is the first weight-loss surgery center in New York State to offer the new non-invasive ROSE procedure, and was the first in the Northeast with the non-invasive StomaphyX™ procedure, which are techniques that reduce the size of a patient’s stomach without the need for any incisions for patients who have gained weight following previous gastric bypass surgery.

Shawn Garber, MD, Chief of Bariatric Surgery, and his colleague in the New York Bariatric Group, Spencer Holover, MD, have performed more than 3,000 minimally invasive weight-loss procedures. And Mercy has both a specially trained bariatric surgery team, as well as a dedicated bariatric unit with rooms and accommodations specially designed for post-surgery comfort and privacy.

Seminars offering education and information are offered monthly at the DeMatteis Center in Greenvale, NY to those individuals who are contemplating bariatric surgery. See "Free Seminars" page for directions.
